An-Nahl \r\n (The Bee)
\r\n Chapter 16: Verse 23

\r\n

Hidden \r\n Arrogance
\r\n
\"There is no doubt that Allah \r\n knows what they keep secret and what they make public. He does not love \r\n people puffed up with pride.\"

\r\n

Generally, the attitudes of people with hidden arrogance vary greatly \r\n from that of the arrogant. The most significant difference between the \r\n two is that an arrogant person can be readily recognised from his outward \r\n appearance, whereas it is difficult for someone with hidden arrogance.

\r\n

Their method of concealing arrogance is quite devious; primarily, they \r\n try to put forth themselves as ideal people. It is essential for them \r\n to be known as \"virtuous,\" being the reason why they aim to \r\n present themselves as \"perfect\" and \"innocent.\" Earning \r\n the praise and approval of others, to be admired by them, and thus, appeasing \r\n their arrogance becomes their main pursuit.

\r\n

Such a type of arrogance is dangerous; it is something like an iceberg. \r\n (About 90 percent of its mass is below the surface of the water.) It is \r\n easy to avoid people who are arrogant, in common sense of the word, since \r\n they are easily recognised. But, it is difficult with those who conceal \r\n their arrogance. Their arrogance becomes obvious only in time, making \r\n it more difficult to admonish them or to explain to them the situation \r\n they are in.

\r\n

Those who conceal their arrogance and claim \r\n purity for themselves may for a while manage to hide their pride from \r\n others, but Allah surely knows and makes known what is concealed in their \r\n hearts.

For The Sake of Allah

\r\n

What does it mean to do everything fi sabilillah, for \r\n the sake of Allah, which should be the core and substance of our \r\n lives? People are in the habit of classifying life's activities \r\n into those which are mundane and those which are religious. Remember, \r\n though, only those things done for \r\n the sake of Allah are the 'religious' things. Everything that \r\n is done for other than Allah however 'religious' it may seem - \r\n is a worldly act. If a person prays showily, it \r\n is a worldly act; if he fasts to expose his spirituality it is \r\n a worldly act; but if he earns thousands of pounds to support \r\n his family and to spend for the cause of Islam, seeking only Allah's \r\n pleasure, it is a highly spiritual act. The Prophet reminded us:

\r\n

Many people fast but gain nothing \r\n from their fasting except hunger and thirst; and many people pray \r\n all night but gain nothing from their night Prayers except sleeplessness. \r\n (Darimi.)

\r\n

What is of most importance to us is not the outward form of our \r\n actions. Although we perform all our duties and conform to all \r\n the protocols, it is the sincerity of purpose and intention behind \r\n our actions that really matters. The Prophet Muhammad, upon whom \r\n be peace, emphatically stated: 'Actions \r\n are judged only by intentions and everyone shall have what he \r\n intended.' (Bukhari, Muslim.)

\r\n

Purpose and intention are like \r\n the soul of a body or the inner capability of a seed. \r\n Many seeds look alike, but as they begin to grow and bear fruit, \r\n their differences become manifest. The purer and higher the motive, \r\n the greater the value and yield of our efforts. For all our daily \r\n actions, we should remind ourselves of the motives behind our \r\n deeds. This may be the best way to ensure the purity and exclusiveness \r\n of purpose and intention.

Gearing up for Ramadan!

\r\n
\r\n
\r\n

Five reasons why we must \r\n plan for Ramadan

\r\n

Have you noticed that each year, Ramadan goes by faster \r\n and faster? This blessed month can’t be left to become \r\n a blur in our memories. It has to be more than that time \r\n of the year we squeeze in fasting amongst the other things \r\n we do daily.

\r\n

One way to make the most of Ramadan is to plan beforehand. \r\n Here are five reasons why you should plan for Ramadan:

\r\n

Reason #1: To be in \"Ramadan \r\n mode\"
\r\n If you plan, you will mentally prepare for it, and it will \r\n force you to see it as the special month it is outside of \r\n your regular routine the rest of the year.

\r\n

Reason #2: To adjust your \r\n schedule
\r\n By planning in advance, you can adjust your work, sleep \r\n and meal schedules in such a way as to make time for Suhoor, \r\n Iftar, etc. That means, for instance, that if you usually \r\n study late, you can instead sleep earlier and start studying \r\n after Suhoor in the early morning hours.

\r\n

Reason #3: You can plan Ramadan \r\n family time
\r\n
Calling a family meeting about a month in advance, \r\n explaining the importance of Ramadan, its implications for \r\n the family and the need to eat Iftar together when possible \r\n as well as to attend Tarawih prayers, for example, will \r\n allow all family members to adjust their work and school \r\n schedules accordingly. That will, Insha Allah, make Ramadan \r\n a blessing not just to every person in the family, but to \r\n the family as a whole.

\r\n

Reason #4: To do good at \r\n high Sawab times
\r\n Match Ibadat with specific times that carry more reward. \r\n Prepare to do Itifkaf, increase asking Allah for forgiveness \r\n in the last ten nights of Ramadan. Plan to give increased \r\n Sadaqa this month. Plan to visit that relative you may have \r\n not seen for months, if not years.

\r\n

Reason #5: You can plan Dawa \r\n activities during Ramadan
\r\n Some Muslims have gone to soup kitchens and made meals during \r\n Ramadan, while they were fasting. This is a great Dawa opportunity \r\n to explain what Ramadan and Islam are about. Planning in \r\n advance for such an activity gives you the time to call \r\n up a soup kitchen in your area, explain what you want to \r\n do, and get your act together. You can also plan school \r\n Dawa activities in Ramadan by planning in advance, by meeting \r\n with the principal or teacher beforehand, preparing a presentation, \r\n etc.
