Living \r\n the Quran

Ta-Ha
\r\n Chapter 20: Verse 120

\r\n

Making \r\n forbidden things attractive
\r\n
Then Satan whispered to him, \r\n saying: 'O' Adam! Shall I lead you to the tree of Eternity and to a kingdom \r\n that will never waste away?'

\r\n

One of the ways in which the Satan deceives man and makes falsehood attractive \r\n to him is calling forbidden things, which \r\n are acts of disobedience towards Allah, by attractive names to deceive \r\n people and confuse them about what is really true, as \r\n he called the forbidden tree the tree of eternal life, so as to make the \r\n thought of eating from it attractive to Adam. He kept claiming that this \r\n was the tree of eternal life, and that eating from it would make him live \r\n forever in Paradise, or would make him one of the angels, until Adam obeyed \r\n him, and was subsequently expelled from Paradise.

\r\n

Look at the friends and supporters of the Satan today, how they use the \r\n same means to mislead people: those who adhere to and promote communism \r\n and socialism claim that these are the only ways which will rid mankind \r\n of confusion, anxiety, ruin and hunger; those who call for women to come \r\n out clothed but naked in the name of freedom, and those who call for facile \r\n acting which stamps on people's honour and morals, and violates sacred \r\n limits in the name of art; those poisonous ideas which promote depositing \r\n money in interest-based banks in order to earn profits in the name of \r\n development and high profits; and those who claim that adhering to religion \r\n constitutes bacdwardness and stagnation, and who described those who call \r\n people to Islam as crazy or agents of the east and west, etc.

\r\n

Ibn al-Qayyim said: \"From Satan his followers learned the method \r\n of calling unlawful things by names which people find attractive. So they \r\n called wine the mother of joy, and they called intoxicants morsels of \r\n delight, and they called riba (usury) business dealings, and they called \r\n taxes the rights of the authorities, and so on ... \"

\r\n

This is a dangerous path for if falsehood \r\n is make to appear attractive to a person he will pursue it with all his \r\n strength, to achieve that which he thinks is right, even \r\n if it will lead to his doom.

Misleading form of conversation

\r\n

Abu Hurayrah reported that Allah's Messenger said: \"Beware \r\n of suspicion, for verily suspicion is the most misleading form of conversation.\" \r\n [Collected by Bukhari & Muslim]

\r\n

Suspicion based on evidence is natural and allowable. For example, \r\n if something was missing from someone's school bag and one student was \r\n known to have been alone in the classroom, he would naturally be a suspect. \r\n But one must avoid excesses in suspicion. A \r\n true Muslim is not overly suspicious. He does not judge \r\n all those around him guilty until proven innocent. Such excesses always \r\n lead to corruption. Often a person who is overly suspicious will openly \r\n express his opinion about others by accusing them with little or no \r\n evidence. And by doing that he falls into the grave sin of slander.

\r\n

The Prophet, peace be upon him, in this hadith confirmed Allah's warning \r\n to avoid a lot of suspicion by telling us to be very careful when dealing \r\n with suspicion whether in large or small quantities. He then went on \r\n to explain why extreme caution must be taken. When suspicion is spoken \r\n about, it becomes the most deceptive from of conversation. \r\n It often fools both the one expressing it, as well as the one \r\n who hears it, because it often carries with it the possibility of being \r\n true. The one who raises the suspicion does not feel \r\n that he is lying because he is only expressing a thought. The one who \r\n hears it then develops a suspicion. He, in turn, passes the suspicion \r\n on to others and others to others. And, that is how rumours are born \r\n and spread.

\r\n

As long as a suspicion remains a thought, \r\n its owner is not held to account for it. A suspicious \r\n person is held to account for his suspicion only when suspicion leaves \r\n the world of thought and becomes an action, whether spoken or done.

\r\n

The greatest danger of suspicion is that it leads to the break-up of \r\n friendships and communities. Trust is \r\n destroyed by suspicion. And without trust there can \r\n be no friendships or cummunity. Thus, Islam stands opposed to suspicion \r\n by encouraging trust among Muslims. We should always think the best \r\n of others until they prove themselves otherwise. In that way, simple \r\n misunderstandings will not become the basis for hate and anger and the \r\n break-up of relationships.

Nine Tips To Dealing with TV

\r\n

It’s tough to escape peer pressure when your friends keep \r\n talking about the clothes, the music and the stars. Today, Television \r\n defines teen culture. With its barrage of alluring advertisements \r\n and captivating shows, it tells you what is cool and what is ‘in’ \r\n and ‘out’. Let Islam, not \r\n the media, decide your dress code, morals, and values.

\r\n

1. Watch what is Halal. \r\n Stick to the most “clean” material you can find. TV should \r\n be used with discretion to watch educational and insightful programs \r\n or decent entertainment.

\r\n

2. Remove the TV from your room. \r\n Having a TV set in your own room encourages you to watch it more. \r\n You are less likely to be tempted by Shaytan to watch something indecent \r\n when you have a parent, a sibling, or a friend watching with you. \r\n Remember, Shaytan loves attacking people who are ‘bored’, \r\n sitting idle, or in a company of bad people. Keep the TV in the main \r\n room, where it won’t distract you.

\r\n

3. Protect your heart from hardening. \r\n Frequent sinning through consuming violence, profanity, and pornography \r\n on TV hardens and blackens the heart. It may reach a point that the \r\n heart may no longer respond to reminders of death, Allah (SWT), or \r\n the Quran. Fear of Allah (SWT) may completely vanish. This is the \r\n worst thing that can happen to you!

\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
The Prophet (PBUH) said: “The \r\n heart will be subjected to trial after trial, and there will appear \r\n a black stain on any heart that is affected. The stain will spread \r\n until the heart is completely black and sealed, to the point that \r\n it will not recognize any good deeds or denounce any evil, except \r\n whatever suits its own desires” (Sahih Muslim).
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n

4. Adopt and support Islamic media. \r\n Hundreds of educational or entertainment multi-media \r\n products crafted by Muslim artists, writers, producers, and singers \r\n hit the market every year. These cartoons, movies, and songs could \r\n be enjoyable for the entire family!

\r\n

5. Limit viewing time. \r\n If you have to watch TV, limit yourself. Write down a number of hours \r\n per week and stick to your limit.

\r\n

6. Resist the urge. \r\n Are your fingers twitching to press that remote? Stop, step outside \r\n and do something. You don’t have to play sports, but do activities \r\n that make you happy.

\r\n

7. Keep the box off when you're doing \r\n other things. Whether you’re eating dinner, \r\n doing your homework, or reading a magazine, you don’t need the \r\n TV to be on at the same time--keeping it on simply encourages you \r\n to watch TV more and neglect other activities.

\r\n

8. Use a VCR to screen material. \r\n Fast-forward dubious content, blitz through commercials, and stick \r\n with what’s good.

\r\n

9. Have a TV free get-together with \r\n friends. Make the following rule: no one will watch \r\n TV or movies in the living room. If you want to go further, make it \r\n a rule that the topics of conversation cannot revolve around the latest \r\n twist in a soap opera or the most recent plot on a sci-fi show. Play \r\n basketball, go for a walk, do anything but watch TV.

\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
\r\n
And remember, Allah (SWT), your best Friend! He is there to help \r\n you. The Prophet told his close companion: “By \r\n Allah! Whoever gives up something for the sake of Allah, Allah will \r\n replace it with something better than it!
