Al-Furqan \r\n (The Criterion) Commentary: \r\nThis happens wherever a larger river flows into the sea. \r\n There are springs of sweet water at several locations in different seas \r\n where the sweet water remains separate from the salty water of the sea. \r\n Sayyidi Ali Rais, a Turkish admiral of the sixteenth century, mentions \r\n in his work, Mir'at al-Mamalik, one such place in the Persian \r\n Gulf. He writes that he found springs of sweet water under the salty water \r\n of the sea and drew drinking water from them for his fellow sailors. In \r\n more recent times, when the Arabian American Oil Company began drilling \r\n oil wells in Saudi Arabia, they used the water of the same springs of \r\n the Persian Gulf as drinking water until the wells in the vicinity of \r\n Dahran were dug. Also, near Bahrain, there are springs of sweet water \r\n under the sea from which people have drawn upon for ages. \r\nThis verse identifies this wondrous \r\n manifestation of God's omnipotence as a evidence of His \r\n Oneness. But there is an additional, albeit more subtle, meaning implicit \r\n in the verse too. No matter how bitter \r\n and salty the ocean of human society may become, God can always produce \r\n a righteous group of people in the same manner that He \r\n can produce a spring of sweet water in the depths of a salty ocean. Ask \r\n Him. He Listens: Dua \r\nTurn each anxiety, each fear and each concern into a Dua \r\n (supplication). Look at it as another reason to submit to God and be in \r\n Sajdah (prostration), during which you are closest to Allah. God listens \r\n and already knows what is in your heart, but He wants you to ask Him for \r\n what you want. The Prophet said: Allah \r\n is angry with those who do not ask Him for anything (Tirmidhi). \r\nThe Prophet once said that in \r\n prayer, he would find rest and relief (Nasai). He would \r\n also regularly ask for God’s forgiveness \r\n and remain in prostration during prayer praising God (Tasbeeh) and asking \r\n for His forgiveness (Bukhari). \r\nAllah wants you to be specific. The Prophet advised us \r\n to ask Allah for exactly what we want instead of making vague Duas. This \r\n will be a series based on the book "Building \r\n a New Society" \r\nFamily Crisis \r\nA normal family comprising both parents and children, \r\n which was considered as the most valued institution of community life \r\n amongst most religious traditions, is now beginning to disintegrate. Divorce \r\n rates in many Western societies are surging, and consequently a one parent \r\n family is now considered a social norm. Today though there are more cars, \r\n washing machines, microwave ovens, TV's, computers, and other domestic \r\n appliances per household, yet peace, love, tranquility and trust are fast \r\n fading from family life. \r\nFrom and Islamic perspective, the major causes of family \r\n breakdown are: \r\n
Today, motherhood is not \r\n valued by society - rather it is seen with contempt. A \r\n woman working for other people in a restaurant or office is valued and \r\n her job is trumpeted as a career. In contrast, a woman who cares for and \r\n looks after her own family is viewed as a backward woman, and her work \r\n is seen to be oppressive. Regrettably, these attitudes and practices have \r\n become so widespread and common that they are not even considered destructive \r\n to social life. \r\nBecause of the lack of marital responsibility, children \r\n are born and grow up never knowing who their \r\n fathers are. This in turn, produces numerous identity, \r\n emotional and psychological problems amongst children, and as a result \r\n many grow up to be delinquents and offenders. \r\nIn cases of one parent families, or where both parents \r\n are in full-time employment, there is usually a lack \r\n of proper parental attention and care towards the young. \r\n This familial deficiency generally leads the young towards social vices \r\n and crimes. Their energies instead of being directed along healthy channels, \r\n are either being wasted away or expended in socially harmful activities \r\n such as drug abuse, gambling, illicit sex and crime. \r\nIn addition, a growing fascination with the latest consumer \r\n goods, films, video games, discos, fashion and leisure activities are \r\n all creating huge financial pressures and \r\n communication gaps between young and old, and between \r\n family and community members. Such interests and past-times, and the resulting \r\n attitudes and lifestyles, are also giving rise to discontentment, disorder \r\n and to general communal decay. \r\n[Compiled from "Building \r\n a New Society", by Zahid Parvez, pp. 79,80] |
